Denveater’s Week in Review, 9/26-10/1
I’m beginning to miss writing actual blogposts. Between deadlines for the guidebook—which you can learn more about here—& those for the Starz Denver Film Festival, I got so slammed that takeout had to suffice. Even so I scored big; they may not look pretty, but this week yielded some of my favorite eats yet.
Chada Thai’s hao moak & curry puffs
Prohibition’s polenta fries with balsamic tomato sauce
Solera’s white-truffle mac & cheese & Thai-style calamari
CoraFaye’s amazing pork necks over rice with all the fixings
Queen of Sheba’s kitfo done the right way—raw & spicy (take that, Arada)
Nice – I definitely need to try that kitfo. Prohibition is also the closest bar to A’s office.
Was that your first trip to Chada Thai? I remember talking about it with you.
Awesome! Looking forward to the guidebook, let me know when it hits the presses and I’ll spread the word
Best,
MR

Ruth-
You certainly do know your Thai food… far better than I do, and I spent 8 years of my childhood in that wonderfully weird country. I’m in Denver, up from Colorado Springs for a week, and wanted to see how the Thai food situation was faring since I moved in 93. J’s Noodles was always my go-to place for Thai back then. There weren’t too many others of note.
Anyhow, I read your pages about Thai restaurants, noting that you picked up on the very thing that makes Thai so un-Thai in darn near every place I have been to in this country, that they “Americanize” the dishes to make them somehow more palatable to our tastes. Criminal!
So, it was with a bit of amazement that I read your review of Thai Pan, because I have NEVER seen ho mok on a menu in the USA. That alone is reason enough for me to give them a try.
The tastes brought me straight back to 1970 Bangkok, where I grew up eating yentafo noodles, ho mok, lad nah, som tam, tort mun pla and everything in between. So thanks! Thanks for actually knowing something about Thai food and putting it out there in hopes that people might have an authentic Thai food experience.
Cheers!
